Lord & Son breaks ground on $25 million school in Pensacola

This week, members of the Escambia County School District and local community marked the groundbreaking of Escambia County’s newest school.

On a nearly 50-acre site adjacent to Ransom Middle School in northwest Pensacola, Kingsfield Elementary School will help meet the needs of the rapid suburban growth in the Pensacola area.

The $25 million school is anticipated to be open for students in the fall of 2018. Once completed, it will be the second new school built by the district in the sprawling suburban communities of Beulah and Cantonment.

Kingsfield Elementary is being built at 900 West Kingsfield Road while the nearly $50 million Northwest Middle School broke ground at 6001 West Nine Mile Road late last year. Both schools are expected to be completed in 2018 and will help ease the burden on older schools in northwest Pensacola, where school overcrowding has become a great concern to the growing metropolitan area of nearly half a million residents.

“By building these new schools, we’re going to get ahead of the problem of severe overcrowding,” said Escambia County superintendent of schools Malcolm Thomas. “We’re going to have some cushion for growth for the next few years.”

Funded by Local Option Sales Tax dollars that Escambia County voters renewed in 2014, Fort Walton Beach-based Lord & Son Construction was chosen as general contractor for the school, which was designed by Pensacola-base Bullock Tice Associates. The 135,000 square foot school will serve 800 students.

“If it [the sales tax] had not been renewed I couldn’t have done this,” Thomas said, referring to building the new schools. “I had to have assurances for the future. We’re not going to put ourselves into debt for the general fund to pay for the schools — we’ve never done that. We’ve always paid cash. I don’t want to cripple our future.”

Serving more than 40,000 students, the Escambia County School District is the largest west of Jacksonville and district officials only expect for that number to steadily rise.

“Our objective is to give relief to the surrounding communities and help the growth that is coming to the area,” said Thomas. “Most of that growth is being spurred by Navy Federal. There are housing developments going up in the area and more planned developments in next few years.”

The school was planned in response to population growth in the area, much of it spurred by the growth of Navy Federal Credit Union, which has grown to become the world’s largest credit union. The company is spending nearly $1 billion on a two-phase expansion project in Pensacola to accommodate its growing workforce. By 2020, it expects to employ 10,000 people in Pensacola.

Thomas said with the new elementary and middle schools, the needs of the district will be met through at least the next five years. With the continued growth of companies like Navy Federal, he said he wouldn’t be surprised for the district to start working on plans for a new high school, which could cost upwards of $75 million.

“We don’t anticipate that [building a new high school] in the near future,” said Thomas. “But what we’d like to see down the road is for the county to set aside some acreage next to Navy Federal for a new elementary, and potentially a new high school for 15 to 20 years down the road.”

Lord & Son to build Pensacola’s newest Elementary School

The Escambia County School District has chosen Lord & Son Construction to build the newest school in Pensacola, where school overcrowding has become a great concern to the growing metropolitan area of nearly half a million residents.

Lord & Son will build the new $25 million Kingsfield Elementary school at 900 West Kingsfield Road next to Ransom Middle School. The 135,000 square foot school will serve 800 students.

“Our objective is to give relief to Pine Meadows and Beulah and help the growth that is coming to the mid-Escambia County area,” said Escambia County superintendent of schools Malcom Thomas. “Most of that growth is being spurred by Navy Federal. There are housing developments going up in the area and more planned developments in next three to five years. We know some of those homes will be families with children.”

The school is being funded by Local Option Sales Tax dollars and is scheduled to open in the fall of 2018. The school was planned in response to population growth in area, much of it spurred by Navy Federal Credit Union.

Ocean City-Wright Fire Station Makes Progress

Work is progressing on a new Ocean City-Wright Fire Station on Racetrack Road.

As the fire district has outgrown its current facility, a new station was chosen to be built. The new facility, located at the corner of Jackson Street and Racetrack Road, will have more space for firefighters, other personnel and storage, as well as an area for training. Currently, firefighters have to train in large parking lots such as the one at Choctawhatchee High School.

The larger and more modern station is expected to be completed in early 2017. After the fire control district settles into its new station, it plans to sell the old station, which was built during the 1960s.

The station will also have a driveway for the fire trucks, an elevator and be in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Arc of Emerald Coast Aquatic Center Groundbreaking Ceremony

343 Holmes Boulevard, Fort Walton Beach Florida

The Aquatic Center will be a unique facility in the Panhandle and will include a 1,400 square foot saltwater pool with walk in/wheelchair capability, and a lift. The pool will be heated with an environmentally sensitive aqua dome for the winter months. A 600 square foot dressing/showering facility will be constructed to accommodate both same-sex and opposite-sex caregivers. The Impact 100 Aquatic Center will help us with our mission to create a path from disability to capability by providing exceptional services so people of all ages can work, learn, achieve personal goals and live meaningful lives.

An aquatic center will not only serve recreational needs but also provide the added preventative and rehabilitative health benefits that improve lives. Life for people with disabilities is difficult. Opportunities for social interaction are limited for people who are dependent on others for some of the most basic functions in life, and this facility will provide an exciting and fun forum in which to make new friends. Lack of exercise leads to depression, isolation, obesity, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, and increased pain, resulting in a loss of independence. Because the water provides a place where physical inequities are minimized, the odds of engagement and continued participation are greater than in other recreational activities. Studies have shown that aquatic activities improve flexibility, strength, balance, and create muscle tone. Once physical inequities are mitigated, the sense of freedom and belonging contribute to the overall well being and quality of life for those people with disabilities. Our goal is to make this center available for all area residents and visitors with disabilities by reaching out through our visitors centers (similar to the ways we advertise pet-friendly hotels or smoke-free facilities).

Lord & Son builds state-of-the-art Air Force tower

Last year, Lord & Son began construction on a new state-of-the-art Variable Height Tower for Air Force Materiel Command at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. The platform tops out at 90 feet and its height can be raised and lowered in five foot increments. This will allow the Air Force to test the most advanced weapon systems in the world to defend our warfighters.

The tower will be utilized by the Air Force for weapons testing on the world-class Eglin reservation. Eglin is the largest military installation in the United States, covering nearly 500,000 acres — roughly the same size as the entire state of Rhode Island!

Throughout the past 40 years, Lord & Son has been relied upon by the military and Air Force to build dozens of projects at Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field, Tyndall Air Force Base, and many other installations.
